Friday, 8/8/08                                                                                Day 188

Today was not the best.  We did school all morning.  We are doing a review of last year to start this year.  By the time we get around to the new grade, it will be about the same time everybody else starts.  Dad worked while we did school.

After lunch, we went to the beach on Bassett Island.  We walked around and took a trail to the other side of the island.  A fruit-bearing shrub, known as the Beach Plum, covers the island.  I like the plant.  It has pretty flowers and you can make jam out of the fruit.  It started to threaten to rain, so we went home.

Back at home, I read my book for two hours.  But then, I upset Josh and got in triple trouble with Mom and Dad, and ended up grounded.  So much for this evening!

Saturday, 8/9/08                                                                                Day 189

Today was so jam-packed with fun that I can't remember before 11:30am!  That is okay because nothing important happened before then.  At 11:30am, we dinghied in to the Kingman Yacht Center to meet our friends John & Pia and their three daughters.  We met them in the Bahamas.  They were chartering a catamaran for the week (see 4/23/08).  They live in Boston, MA, but keep their boat here at Kingman Yacht Center.  They have both a slip and a mooring ball here, and they are letting us use their slip.  (They moved their sailboat to the mooring ball this afternoon.)  Ms. Pia was out of town, so we only saw with Mr. John, Julianna (13), Mariell (11), Carrissa (7), and a friend of theirs, Alex.  They are all big Red Sox fans, and Josh and I wore our Yankees t-shirts which made them mad.  We spent almost the whole time trying to prove that our team was better.  Neither side would give.  That's to be expected.  Ha, ha!

Mr. John let us borrow his minivan so that we could drive to North Falmouth, MA to go to a beach party one of Dad's fraternity brothers was throwing.  When we arrived at Jamie Rome's place (about 1:30PM), we ate lunch and headed down to the beach across the road where the action was.  We met up with the Gizzi's and camped with them.  Dad met up with Bob Cheek too, another fraternity brother he hasn't seen for at least 20 years.  It was a great little reunion.  We played in the water and dug in the sand.  I started weaving a grass mat out of some abundant scrub and saw-grass.   I also held baby Stella again.  Today she is 2 weeks old.  She's cute and tiny!  I also took Hugo (age 4) out to the end of a breakwater because he could not go alone.  That was fun.  The whole party was fun!!

It was about 6:30pm when we got home.  Mr. John had moved their boat to the mooring ball.  We stopped by, but they had to go pick up Ms. Pia from the airport.  We will meet up with them another time.  We'll also move Liberty to the slip in the morning.  Great today truly was!

P.S.  Hey!  The 2008 Summer Olympic Games held in Beijing, China started yesterday!  I wonder how the USA is doing?

Sunday, 8/10/08                                                                                Day 190

Today is Sunday.  We found a Methodist Church and walked there.  It was a very small church without many members.  The readings and songs were all short, but the sermon was long.  There was also no communion.  We went to 9:00am worship.

When we got back to the boat, we ate lunch and went to the beach on Bassett Island, the same one as on 8/8/08.  This time, we all walked all the way around the island.  We found a bucketful of shells, mostly scallops.  I talked with Dad about getting a kneeboard to pull behind the dinghy, and he said that we'll look into it.  There were a lot of people on the far side of the beach.  I guess that's the cool side.

Daddy left to do projects, but Mom, Josh and I played for a while longer.  Bro and I caught minnows in the shallows.  I had found a whole scallop with the scallop inside that the fish were eating, and we used it as bait.  We caught a ton of one type, as well as a bunch of little shiners (anchovies).  That was fun.

We got back fairly late in the afternoon.  We hung out for the rest of the day and had an early dinner.  Dad and I made a conch horn out of one of the shells we collected in the Double Breasted Cays, Abacos, Bahamas.  We used the dremmel to cut off the top and then used a bit of putty epoxy to seal up the hole where Dad conched the conch.  It works!  I can play it really well.  I am so happy that we finally
made a conch horn.  Now, when we go back to the Bahamas, I will blow it every sunset.  We played Clue after dinner.  Dad won.  It was fun.  All of today was fun.

Monday, 8/11/08                                                                                Day 191

It rained all day.  So we hung out.  During gaps in the rain, we did laundry and played outside.  Other than that, we did school and worked on a website that doesn't want to work.  It's frustrating.

While doing laundry at the marina's expensive Laundromat, Mom met a couple - Carl & Barb - that are out cruising.  They came over for cocktails.  We were going to go over to their boat for dessert after we each independently had dinner, but by the time the rain stopped, it was too late.  I am tired.

Tuesday, 8/12/08                                                                                Day 192

Everything about today was great.   Mr. John came down to the marina this morning without his family, who came later.  We talked with him for a while, and then he went to his boat.  We did school until a little after lunch.  Dad borrowed Mr. John's car and went to refill our propane tank and do some grocery shopping.

At 4:30pm, Jamie Rome, the guy who had the party on Saturday, and his family came over to see the boat.  They have a 2 year old son, Henry, and I had to baby-sit him for an hour and a half while they were here.  We played with cars and had fun.

At 6:00pm, after the Romes left, we met up with Mr. John and his family.  We met Thalia, their 7 yr. old cousin, who they swapped for Julianna.  We went over to the Kingman Yacht Club, to which they belong, and cooked our food at their facilities.  It was nice.  We had kabobs.  After dinner, we watched the Olympics in HD on the flat screen TV at the club.  We saw Michael Phelps make history for the most career gold medals ever.  He swam the 200m fly.  We also saw Shawn Johnson lead the USA women's gymnastic team.  It was awesome!  By the time we got home, it was 11:30pm.  Here's a quote from me - "Yawn."

Wednesday, 8/13/08                                                                        Day 193

Today was not good at all ... It was great!  Mr. John, Ms. Pia, Mariell, Carissa and Thalia slept on their boat last night.  At 11:00am this morning, just after Josh and I had finished the day's school, they dinghied in and asked us if we wanted to go sailing.  We said yes, grabbed our stuff, and dinghied out to their boat.   We spent the rest of the day with them.  We sailed beautifully all around Buzzard's Bay.  It was fun.

Then we came in and anchored in Mill Pond - an inlet in Bassett's Island.  We jumped over and swam.  We tied a boogie board to the boat and played on it and also swung off the dinghy davits.  Carissa and I even took the boogie board and swam to a nearby mooring.  That was all really fun.

Then we came back to the mooring ball in Redbrook Harbor and we dinghied back to our boat.  They had to head back to their house in Boston and switch back kids.  We ate Spaghetti Aglio Olio w/ shrimp for dinner.  We are going to play Yahtzee.  I like it here at Kingman Yacht Center.

Thursday, 8/14/08                                                                                Day 194

Today in Cataumet, MA, we spent the whole day away from Kingman Yacht Center and Liberty.  We were gone for all three meals of the day.  To tell the truth, it was pretty boring.

Before breakfast, I did my history for the day.  Then we left the boat and went to a coffee shop - The Daily Brew - for breakfast and a good internet connection. The shop had this weird thing about mermaids.  Sculptures, paintings, figureheads, clocks, mugs, handles, etc. were everywhere you looked.  We were there until about 12:30pm.  Josh and I did school and when we were finished, we watched the Olympics on TV.

We left there and went to Evan's for pizza for lunch.  Grocery shopping was next.  Then we drove to Falmouth to go to West Marine.  I spent most of the time there looking at kneeboards to pull behind the dinghy (like the tube) in the West Marine catalog.  They range from about $80 - $200+.  I found two nice ones for Beginner/Intermediate at $100 & $120 (page 1053 for future reference).  We might buy one.  I hope we do!

We went home from there.  But not straight home.  It was 5:00pm and we were getting hungry, so we stopped for and early dinner at some Chinese Restaurant.  It was good.

It is now 8:00pm.  We moved Liberty from the slip and anchored the boat out, so that Mr. John and his family can move back to their slip when they come down tonight and get much needed shore power.  Starting tomorrow, we are all going to go cruising together and go as far south as Martha's Vineyard, MA., if weather permits.  We may even raft up.  It looks like the weather may be crummy.  I hope it's not.
